A slim, wavy-haired, yet tough character actor of films and TV, often seen as cops or other authority figures, Gregory acted in summer stock in the late 1930s, hitting Broadway in "Key Largo" (1939), "Journey to Jerusalem" (1940) and "In Time to Come" (1941). The war interrupted his career; Gregory served in the Marines and abandoned a potential Wall Street career to continue acting.
