A former jazz musician and a Tony winner on Broadway, Hal Linden was perhaps best known to the general public as Captain Barney Miller, the world-weary head of New York’s 12th Precinct on “Barney Miller” (ABC, 1975-1982). Linden’s performance as Barney, which echoed the show’s balance of broad comedy and earnest human drama, earned him an Emmy nomination for each season of its network run, as well as a fistful of Golden Globe nods.
