biography

Sleek, dark, sinister-looking former boxer and Broadway dancer, best known for his portrayals of smooth, underworld characters, as in "Scarface" (1932) and "Each Dawn I Die" (1939). A big star at Paramount in the 1930s, Raft also played more conventional romantic leads in many films of the 1930s and 40s, and when his stardom finally waned in the mid-50s essayed occasional character roles thereafter.
