Broadway actress who made her screen debut in 1934 and, four years later, earned simultaneous Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress ("Jezebel", for which she won) and Best Actress ("White Banners"). Often in matriarchal roles, Bainter was also acclaimed for "The Children's Hour" (1962), her last film. Mother of actor Richard Venable.
