biography
Blonde, former model whose career in TV and films has seen her play many girlfriends and wives of thugs and cops, as well as cops herself, Darlanne Fluegel was the wife of cop Billy Crystal in "Running Scared" (1986), the exercise instructor who picks up ex-con Kirk Douglas in "Tough Guys" (1986), and the paroled woman bedded by Willem Dafoe as an information mole in "To Live and Die in L.A." (1985), perhaps her most memorable role. Fluegel (who dropped the first "e" in some early credits), was a cover girl model in New York when she won her first "acting" role, that of a model being photographed by Faye Dunaway in "The Eyes of Laura Mars." It was two more years before Fluegel won a substantial acting part, opposite Richard Thomas in "Beyond the Stars," and four more years before she was cast as Eve, De Niro's girlfriend during parts of "Once Upon A Time in America." Her film career picked up after that with "Running Scared," "Tough Guys," and "To Live and Die in L.A.," but cooled in the late 80s. In 1992, she was in "Pet Sematary Two." TV picked up the slack. Fluegel was Dennis Farina's estranged and then ex-wife in the series "Crime Story" in 1986, and in 1990 joined the cast of "Hunter" as Officer Joanne Malinski, replacing Stepfanie Kramer as the female lead. Malinski was killed off three months later. Fluegel also had a key role in one of the "Wiseguy" sequences in 1990, and occasionally appeared in TV movies, such as "Slaughter of the Innocents" for HBO in 1993, and "Come Die With Me: A Mickey Spillane Mike Hammer Mystery" in 1994, an attempt to revive the Spillane franchise in which Fluegel was the dame he was attracted to, but couldn't trust.
