Courteney Cox is returning to television. The former Friends star, who most recently produced and starred in the dark comedy Dirt on FX, has signed on for a half-hour comedy on ABC.

Cox will star as a newly single 40-year-old mom in Cougar Town, which refers to middle-aged women who prey on younger men. (On a related note: How much younger is Cox's real-life hubby, David Arquette? He dresses like he's 7, but anyway.) Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence will partner with Cox to co-executive produce and write the pilot.

Cox and Lawrence have a long professional history. He was a writer on season one of Friends, and she recently shot a guest appearance on Scrubs. Scrubs moves from NBC to ABC this year for its eighth season.
