In the 1980s, only news junkies and insomniacs may have known Charlie Rose who was then host of "CBS News Nightwatch" which aired on weeknights from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. But in the 90s, the gentlemanly Rose went national with his own late-night talk show, first for syndication and The Learning Channel, and then for PBS, and in the process offered viewers some celebrities, to be sure, but more often the newsmakers and thinkers of both the USA and the world.
