Tall and gangly, with a face, body and manner screaming for comedy, Betty Thomas parlayed a job as a waitress at a comedy club into a career first as an Emmy-winning actress, followed by that of an Emmy-winning director who now threatens to crack the A-list of feature directors. Thomas was a high school art teacher trying to earn extra money for a trip to Europe when she took a job as a waitress at the Second City improvisational club in Chicago.
